Called the Detroit Observatory, it was built on Ann Street in Ann Arbor in 1854. Illinois alumnus Austin Edmister (BS Physics ‘15) is Associate Director for Astronomy and will take our group on a private tour of the original observatory and telescope along with the more recent additions . If weather permits we will also get to use the telescope for observing.
There is a lecture happening prior to our event so Austin suggests you don’t try to arrive early, since the other event will still be going.
PARKING
Austin recommends people navigate to the Ann Street garage (M86 on google) or the lot behind the public health buildings (M28). They are both free, within two blocks of the Observatory, and open to the public after hours. Other garages that start with a "P" cost money or require you to be a hospital visitor to use them.
LOCATION
The Observatory is located at 1398 E. Ann Street (at the corner of Ann and Observatory Streets) in Ann Arbor, MI. Please use the building entrance to the addition on Observatory Street; the old entrance facing Ann Street is no longer used for entry.
ACCESSIBILITY
While the building is accessible for people with mobility issues the dome and original telescope are not. If you have an accessibility issue please let us know in advance and we can see if it is possible for them to set up their video streaming system to the other sections of the building.
WHAT TO WEAR
The observing dome is going to be the same temperature as outdoors and open when observing so dress accordingly if it is cold or hot out!
